How meditation can improve your physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing

Meditation is one of the most beneficial self-care regimes you can follow.

There is a long list of scientifically proven benefits to introducing meditation into your daily routine, with numerous studies showing that it can have a hugely positive impact on your physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing.

Meditation for the mind is what exercise is to the body and it’s a personal journey of self-discovery and enlightenment – and truly one of the greatest gifts that you can give yourself!

When you meditate daily you become the best version of yourself that you can be. Meditation can become your medication like it has done for me and it can become your superpower.

The benefits of meditation

When people think about meditation, science isn’t automatically the first thing that comes to mind.

But there is science behind the power of meditation and the results manifest in every aspect of your life. From changes in grey matter volume (i.e. improved information processing) to reduced activity in the “me” centres of the brain (minimising the impact of those pesky ‘mind monkeys’) to enhanced connectivity between brain regions (helping you to improve your mood, quicker).

Some of the direct results of introducing meditation into your routine include:

  • Improves your sleep: more sleep at night means brighter, more alert days.

  • Helps you stress less: allows room for more happiness, stillness and calm.

  • More mindful eating: no more stress eating or bad routines when it comes to food.

  • Reduce pain and helps you heal faster: A lot of pain can be relieved with the right mindset and techniques to handle difficult situations.

  • Helps you to handle anxiety: meditation provides you with the tools you need to cope in moments of anxiety.

  • Improves your general mood: think of it like a happy pill, with no side effects!

  • Relax: Meditation introduces a silence and stillness into your mind and body that creates internal peace, clarity and fulfilment.

  • Enhance your love life and personal relationships: those around you will benefit from the transformation meditation can provide.

  • Lead a successful life: helps you to identify and forge a clear path to achieving your goals.

A tool kit for life

One of the most important points to remember about meditation is that it’s a toolkit for life.

The sense of calm, peace and balance that meditation provides doesn’t end when your session ends. Meditation can help carry you more calmly through your day and may help you manage symptoms of certain medical conditions.

When you meditate you clear away any information or emotions that are building and contributing to your stress. As well as helping you gain a new perspective on stressful situations, it helps increase your self-awareness and build the skills you need to manage your stress.

It helps reduce negative emotions by increasing your patience and tolerance, as well as allowing you to focus on the present rather than getting caught up in past traumas or future worries.

There are many types of meditation and relaxation techniques so I can guarantee there’s a meditation out there that will work for you. It’s not always about ‘oms’ and ‘ahs’ but whichever type of meditation you go for, they all share the same goal of achieving inner peace.
