Meditation is my Medication
As you may have read on my ‘About’ page, I have battled with my health, most of my life. Like many others that live with a chronic condition, we are all offered a lot of conventional drugs to ‘numb the pain’.
I just wanted to share with you a bit about my previous relationship with pain - in hope that you may be able to relate on some level.
It was EXHAUSTING. The pain in my body & in my life was so overwhelming. It made it difficult to focus on anything else. I felt like I couldn’t enjoy things to the full because this pain would follow me everywhere I went. It haunted me & I couldn’t escape it.
I hated my illness. But what I didn’t realise is, I was giving so much of my energy to how much I hated it, that it was draining me. I was actually attracting more pain because of the amount of focus I gave to it.
Once I learned to accept that the illness was a part of me - a part of my journey - only then could I allow myself to heal.
For me, meditation was able to help me to heal on all levels. Physically, emotionally & spiritually. Once I tapped into the power of meditation, I wanted to help others too.
I’d love to share with you, how meditation changed everything for me.
I adopted a regular practice - Just 10 minutes of meditation a day helped me to reduce pain & heal faster. All by changing my mindset. Creating a habit of mindfulness, stillness & being in the present moment will relieve stress & anxiety that can greatly contribute to pain.
A breakdown helped me to rise up - Daily meditation has turned my life around! I have learned to control my pain through acceptance. You cannot always control everything, especially when it comes to health. Learning to accept it as it is will help you to persevere.
Smiles without medication - Meditation means that I no longer have to take conventional medication for emotional or physical pain. I’m giving my body the opportunity to heal itself more naturally. I feel more engaged & happy without the dependence on drugs.
How I speak to pain - I now accept & love my pain. I honour that it is a part of me. Meditation helped me to see this & I will continue to take this into my heart space.
So - That’s all well & good, but what about the science behind it all?
Brainwaves
Evidence shows that meditation brings brainwaves into an Alpha state, which promotes healing. Various studies have been conducted to physically show these differences on brain scans.
Harnessing the ‘Power to ignore’
An Alpha state helps people with chronic pain to reduce perception of pain. Breath work is an ancient practice which helps people to process without panic, thus reducing the pain on an emotional & physical level.
Controlling your brain
People who regularly practice mindfulness experience less pain, by deactivating certain parts of the brain.
